Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
read the book!!! it surprised me that they (a loose collective, for the more pedantic)played on a lot more than you would have thought even the early byrds stuff, real top top hits

Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
Well yeah, they were only called the Wrecking Crew later on by Hal Blaine the drummer, because of disparaging remarks made to them by other musicians but they were definitely a very good group of session musicians

Incidentally, I have just learned that Glen Campbell was also a member

Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
I guess he was more of a behind the scenes guy .... a musicians musician as the cliché goes with his best work done with people like Joe Cocker and Elton John.

RIP

Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
Kind of posthumously bestowed on a bunch of blokes who were just the blokes on the LA session scene at the time. As distinct to the Mar-Keys who were a clearly identifiable group of players who sometimes recorded and toured in that name. And the Funk brothers who were somewhere in between.

And no disrespect at all to any of the musicians concerned.

Surf, what do you mean by "made up"?

SurfaceAgentX2Zero 10:43 Mon Nov 14
Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
Hmmm. No disrespect to Leon Russell, but the whole 'Wrecking Crew' thing is a bit made up. LA's extraordinarily fluid and large white answer to the Funk Brothers who were Detroit's fluid and large answer to the Mar-Keys - who were about ten blokes.

Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
Mike Hunt, Wrecking Crew were brilliant, played on the Beach Boys and Ronettes as well as others, I personally rate Hal Blaine the drummer, I never knew Leon Russell was part of the Wrecking Crew though

Re: Leon Russell R.I.P
Master craftsman was Mr. Russell. The respect from his fellow musicians is clear on George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh (album).
